It should come as no surprise that we’re pretty big fans of Australia’s most iconic airline — not only did we recently try their life-changing business-class product on our way to NYC, but any carrier that decks out John Travolta with his own flying mansion is alright by us. However, we didn’t have a Qantas massive flash sale on our bingo card for August 2024, and it’s only endeared us towards the airline further…
However, the timing doesn’t feel like a coincidence. The psychodrama of Australia’s airline industry is never far from the spotlight, but with the recent collapse of regional carriers shaking up the market this flash sale — offering one million discounted fares on 85 routes across the country — comes as smaller airlines like Bonza and Rex slide slowly down the pan, making it a savvy move on behalf of the big white kangaroo.
Qantas’ Flash Sale
Qantas’ seven-day sale — which began today Monday 26th August — covers flights departing between October 2024 and July 2025. With discounts of up to 30%, the sale offers travellers a chance to book flights at a fraction of the usual cost, with a one-way ticket from Melbourne to Sydney now going for just $129, while a flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney can be snagged for as little as $109.
However, the sale extends far beyond the standard “commuter” routes between state capitals, with popular tourism routes — such as Brisbane to Proserpine and Albury to Brisbane — offering an irresistible alternative for anyone planning their next getaway. A spokesperson for the carrier said this:
“And with discounts of up to 30 per cent across the network, there is no better time to book that next beach escape, city break, or interstate adventure.”
Regional Airline Turmoil
Bonza — which entered voluntary administration in April — has left 60,000 customers out of pocket and hundreds of employees without wages. Meanwhile, Rex also entered voluntary administration on July 30th, cancelling flights between major cities and casting significant doubt on the future of its regional routes.
Qantas and Virgin Australia have stepped in to assist impacted passengers. While both airlines offering to honour tickets from Rex without additional fees is a move that has been widely praised, many also see it as Australia’s two largest aviation titans eyeing up new territory.
Whatever the motivations behind the sale, this is a very rare chance to pick up some of Qantas’ most popular routes at a bargain bucket price…. get in there, or live with the regret.
