When I bought my first pair of skinny jeans (Sass + Bide, black, a zip so short it was almost obscene) I felt like a total fashion revolutionary. It was Newcastle in the early naughties, and as an early adopter I felt so smug.
“Urgh, I’ll never wear a boot cut again”. “Flares? You’re kidding!”. From now on, I thought, my jeans need to be so tight it’s impossible to remove them without laying down (at least), or asking a flatmate to help peel them off (more likely).
But what is this I see the street style photographers in the world’s top fashion cities capturing on the modern-day muses?
Boot. Cut. Jeans.
Flares.
‘Mom’ jeans.
WTF?
And when I saw my own fashion love, Leandra Medine aka The Man Repeller in a pair of awkward-length, wide-cut Valentino trousers (yes, I feel the need to refer to them as trousers rather that jeans because I just don’t know what to make of them), my heart sunk. It’s arrived.
I know Rachel Zoe has been wearing them for years, but I could only assume it was some sort of stylist trickery to lengthen her 5 foot frame.
But Miroslava, Bilson, MOSS?
Clear some space in the wardrobe ladies. Wide-leg jeans are having a renaissance.
